Why are people today so unhappy with traditional values? It seems that more and more, the things which have traditionally been important to people, the old-fashioned values which have driven humanity for millenniums, are considered just that: Old-fashioned. Times change, these people say. Civilization moves onward, and with it, they reason that what civilization strives for must change as well. And so the old things are put aside. Family values are obsolete. The traditional "nuclear family", of married parents who raise their own children, is obsolete. Marriage itself is obsolete, an antiquated relic from the past. After all, why tie yourself down that way, right? When your current partner gets boring, you can just dump them and find another. If you already have children, they'll survive with just one parent. The Bible is obsolete. Many say it must be re-written to reflect the changing times. Others simply dismiss religion itself as obsolete, a device of the past to keep people in line. Biological humanity is obsolete. Many scientists predict a future of electromechanical, rather than carbon-based, people. They will be immune to biological viruses and bacteria, having no cells to infect. They will be utterly efficient, solar-powered, requiring very little energy, and non-polluting. Will they be capable of emotion? Perhaps; perhaps not. After all, someday emotion will be a thing of the past, an obsolete value of old-fashioned people. A brave new world. A Utopian new future.
