A while ago, I wrote about my opinion on school, and why I feel that the current system of education is all wrong, and how school should be made voluntary rather than mandatory. Some people have said that I am against education because of this, that I am an enemy of knowledge and learning. I feel nothing could be farther from the truth. The reason I am opposed to school is not because I am against education and learning, but rather, because I am for it. In today's day and age, we have more information than ever before. Indeed, we have more information than we could be reasonably expected to absorb. This means that we cannot try to learn everything that we could possibly learn; This would be impossible. Rather, we must try to learn what it most important. We need to decide what knowledge is most pertinent and useful, and choose to study that before other, less important things. I call this concept "information triage". In traditional triage, a hospital or other institute of medical health analyzes its patients, ranks them on how sick they are, and treats them in order according to this. Desperately ill people are treated first, while people who are not so urgently in need of attention will be tended to later. So it needs to be with knowledge. Information which is of doubtful value, which we may never need, or rarely need, should be learned later. Why study such matters, when much more pressing things are at hand? Why waste time that way? The next time you decide to study something, think about how it could relate to your life. Could it have important everyday application? Could it be useful at all? Or is it merely information, bare facts without relevance? In today's world, we need to study and learn more than ever before. It is said that "knowledge is power". And while this may not always be the case, it is true that having a good education is a great aid to any life. And so the modern human must actively search out new things which they do not know. And always, they must be mindful of how useful the information they learn is.
