Setting up Windows XP in DOS mode If you run the SETUP.EXE program on the Windows XP CD from a true MS-DOS prompt (i.e. not just a DOS window running on top of a Windows session), you'll get a "This program cannot be run in DOS Mode." error message. This error is by design; Windows XP is designed to be set up from within another version of Windows, not from DOS. However, you can easily bypass this problem by simply using a different setup program. The right program to use if you want to set up Windows XP from DOS can be found on the CD in the following path: \i386\winnt.exe If you run this program, you should be able to set up Windows XP from there. This is a known issue and exists in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (MSKB) as article number Q278104.
