People seem to stagnate after a while. If you look at them and how they lead their lives, it seems that most of them will stop growing or advancing at some point, and simply lead the rest of their lives in a set course. They become happy (or at least satisfied) with their job, where they live, how they live, and they fall into a familiar pattern until they grow old. It's a bit worrisome to think that people are simply abandoning their lives in this way. On the one hand, they seem to think of it as stability. To be sure, stability is a comforting and helpful thing in life, and if you can find something you're comfortable with, it's hard to want to change it, since many people's ultimate goal in life is simply to be happy. But if you believe (as I do) that everybody has a purpose in life, and a meaningful purpose at that, one that goes beyond simply establishing a spot for yourself in the world and supporting yourself and perhaps your family, then it seems that simply living to exist isn't all that there is to life. Life is all too short to throw away, and if you have no higher goal than to live, it all seems sort of... Pointless. I would encourage people to always keep thinking of what they could do next. There's always something new to do. The notion that someone is done with their life is never true. The saying "I've earned my rest" isn't true either; Death is the only true rest, and until you die, you still owe it to the world to stay active. Until the world is a perfect place (and I think anyone would agree that a perfect world is still a long way off), there's a task for all of us in improving the state of things, however small our contributions may be.
